If you have ever been affected by Insomnia, then you will know its more than not being able to get to sleep, or get to sleep quickly. It can take over your whole life if it is allowed, and might not seem like you have a choice in the matter. There are things you can do to combat insomnia if it does have a hold on you. The purpose of this article is to look at what insomnia actually is, who is affected by it and what you can do about it.

There is no one definition from insomnia because it really does depend on how severe the symptoms. People suffering from insomnia, dubbed insomniacs will describe not being able to shut their eyes to not being able to stop their mind from working. Insomnia does mean not being able to get a quality sleep for a normal period of time. It can be, getting an ineffective sleep or not being able to sleep for a long period of time. This will have a massive impact on the energy and mood of the person affected, as sleep is necessary to keep the immune system functioning properly.

Insomnia can be labeled as mild to even quite severe, depending on certain factors such as how long it occurs and how often. Poor eating habits, poor lifestyle and of course sleeping habits can all be to blame in the less severe of cases. It is generally considered to be chronic when it occurs for more than a month and on most nights. Insomnia isn't just felt by one age group, it is common in all ages from the very young right through to the elderly. Almost all adults will agree that they have experienced symptoms of sleeplessness at one point and this could have even been insomnia. Most professionals seem to agree that women are more likely to be affected than mean, and quite often after menopause.

Thinking about the treatment of Insomnia, really comes back to the root cause of it in the first place. The hard part is that this cause is not always obvious or even known at all. Insomniacs can tend to worry about not getting enough sleep and about what may happen to their health as a consequence. It really can become a catch-22 situation because without the worrying, often the symptoms are not there at all. Just like depression though, it is not just a matter of thinking positive and everything will be ok. While I do believe that a positive mindset certainly does help maintain a healthy mind and body as a result, it is not just like turning a light switch on. It can be caused by excessive or regular daytime naps, and possibly by excessive consumption of caffeine so if you this is you and you do suffer from Insomnia, you may not have seen the connection before.

While sleeping tablets are very often handed out to combat insomnia they can never be more than a short term solution, or a quick fix. They will never actually fix the cause in the first place.
